What Is Generative Engine Optimization? The Plain Answer
# What is generative engine optimization? The plain answer
Some of your customers may be asking an AI tool for a roofer or a plumber instead of scrolling through Google. You won't see them do it. You also won't know whether the answer named your business or someone else's.
We can't tell you how many of your customers do this, because we don't have a count for your town. We can tell you that these tools will answer "who's a good plumber near me" with business names. It costs nothing to see whether yours comes up.
What generative engine optimization means, in plain words
We tell every owner the same thing about AI: it's a tool to help your business. It's not there to run your business, and it's not there to replace anybody.
Generative engine optimization, or GEO, follows the same idea. You're not handing your marketing to a robot. You're making sure the tools your customers already use can find correct, current information about you.
Where it overlaps with the SEO you already know
GEO doesn't replace SEO. It sits on top of it. The groundwork is the same:
- accurate business listings
- a website that says clearly what you do
- real reviews from real customers
If you've already cleaned up your Google listing and your website, you've done a good share of the work.
Where it's different
A Google search gives the customer a page of results to pick from. You can sit near the bottom and still get a call. An AI answer usually gives a short list of names, or just one. It either names you or it doesn't.
AI answers can also draw on other sites, such as directories, review sites and local "best of" lists. If your business isn't on those sites, or your details there are wrong, the AI has less to go on.
We won't pretend to know how any of these tools rank or weigh what they find. What you can check is what the tools can see, and that's what the rest of this article covers.
Checks you can run today
None of these need a hire or a new budget. Most take an afternoon.
Ask the AI tools what your customers ask
Type the questions your customers would ask into the AI tools they use, in their words:
- "Who's a good roofer near Tuscaloosa?"
- "Who can fix my AC today?"
- "Best plumber in my area for a water heater?"
Write down whether your business shows up, what the answer says about you, and which websites it mentions.
AI tends to tell you what you want to hear, so verify before you trust it. Don't ask "Is my business good?" Ask the way a stranger with a leaking pipe would, and ask again on a different day.
Make your Google Business Profile complete and correct
If you only have time for one item on this list, pick this one. Your Google Business Profile matters more than your website.
Add current photos of your work and your trucks. Google's own help page says to add at least three photos showing your management team and your employees (support.google.com). A profile that's half filled in gives every tool less to work with.
Keep your name, address and phone identical everywhere you're listed
Search your business name and look at every listing that comes up: directories, your Facebook page, the chamber of commerce site, trade association pages.
Look for the small stuff. "Suite" on one site and "Ste." on another. An old phone number from before you switched carriers. A shortened version of your business name. Each of those makes it harder for a tool to tell that all those listings are the same business. Fix what you can and write down the logins so you can fix it next time too.
Have your website say plainly what you do, where you do it, and answer real questions
Somewhere near the top of your home page, put a sentence a stranger could repeat back: what you do and which towns you serve. "We repair and install heating and air systems in Tuscaloosa and Northport" does more work than a slogan.
Then add the questions your phone rings with. Do you take emergency calls? Do you serve my town? How fast can you get here? Do you give estimates? Answer each in a sentence or two, in the same words you'd use on the phone. Those plain answers give AI tools something clear to quote.
Keep real reviews coming in
Ask every happy customer for a review, and make it easy: send the link by text right after the job. Reply to the reviews you get, good and bad, like a person would. Skip anything fake.
What we found when we ran this on ourselves
We ran these checks on our own business this fall. We put a set of customer-style questions through AI tools and looked at what came back.
AI answers named Stellaris Ridge in 2 of those questions. We're not going to dress that up. We're a young business, and we expected to be thin.
The second finding was more useful. The AI answers cited 56 sites that we have no listing on at all. The answers pointed to those pages, and we weren't on them. That list is now our to-do list. It's also why we tell owners to run the listing check before trying anything fancy.
The honest limits
Nobody controls what an AI tool says. Not us, not you, not anyone selling GEO.
The answers change from day to day. Ask the same question twice and you may get different names. That makes any check a snapshot of one moment, so run it again every few weeks and look at the pattern over time.
Nobody can guarantee your business will show up in AI answers. If someone promises that, ask them how they'd know.
Every check above helps you even if no AI tool ever mentions you. A correct Google profile, matching listings, a clear website and steady reviews also help the customer deciding whether to call you.
Where to go from here
Start with the first check this week and write down what you find. If you want to know more about who we are, read our about page, or browse more plain answers on the blog.
